Advising and Evaluation

Upon arrival at NYCEP, each student will be assigned one or two faculty advisor(s) from the home university whose research interests broadly correspond to those enunciated by the student. Advisors may be changed easily as a student's needs and plans are modified through the training program, and faculty from other institutions often informally advise students and form part of their examination and dissertation committees. The NYCEP Co-Director at each institution (Cords, Delson or Harrison) is also available to advise students on general matters.

Course programs will be selected in consultation with the advisor(s), who will also guide the student through the qualifying examination procedures at their university. Coursework and the dissertation proposal defense are usually completed in the fifth to seventh term of a student's career. Full-time research on the dissertation topic will normally commence during the fourth year, depending upon its location and funding. It is expected that most NYCEP students will receive the doctorate within six years of entering the program.

Continued NYCEP support will be dependent upon satisfactory progress as judged by a faculty committee which meets each semester. Grades, faculty evaluations and the qualifying examinations will be used to track student performance, and each student will be advised how best to take advantage of the available resources and maintain the highest quality program. Details of this progress may differ at each university (see individual Institutions pages).
